Red carpet, flash bulbs, interviews, the works.
OK, none of that, but The Lone Star Music Awards are always top notch, and I enjoy attending them, as I’ll be doing tonight.
I think I’ll wear a tie, too, because why not?
Awards are funny things when it comes to art. I get the point– it’s nice to recognize someone for their hard work– but, you know, it’s art. Art is rewarding to make in and of itself. I don’t know if it can or should be awarded anything. The reward is the award.
But I don’t have an issue with at least trying to figure out how to award an artist something for their work– the intent is pure and kind and rather nice, for the most part.
I don’t expect that Wide Listener will win, which is completely fine with me. It’s in a category that has some really nice albums around it. It wins (and I do too) every time someone tells me how much a song connects with them personally. I’m not pulling your leg, either. That’s the kind of thing that charges me up for weeks upon weeks, both spiritually and mentally. That’s the kind of thing that lets you know that, indeed, you can create your art on a pretty high level.
Would a physical award do that for me? I have no idea. I think the last physical award I won was… shoot I don’t even remember. Does a high school varsity letter count? Wait, I think we had letters in college, too.
I do hope there are free chips and salsa again this year, now that I’m thinking about it. That stuff was killer.
